On Aug. 14, 2008 at around 8:00 am Sergeant Scott Hathcock of the Wasatch County Sheriffs Department died due to an unknown medical problem. Sgt. Hathcock had stopped a vehicle for speeding on SR-189 just west of the Deer Creek Reservoir. During the course of the traffic stop Scott collapsed at the side of the vehicle he had stopped. The driver of the vehicle immediately called for assistance. Other motorists stopped to assist the fallen officer and initiated CPR. Officers and emergency medical personnel arrived on scene but were unsuccessful in reviving Sgt. Hathcock. Deputy Hathcock passed away on scene at around 9:10 am. The Utah Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation but do not see any signs of foul play. The Office of the State Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Scott worked for the Utah Highway Patrol from 1984 until he retired in 2007. He held several positions with UHP and was known as a hard worker with a good attitude. After he retired Sgt. Hathcock went to work for the Wasatch County Sheriffs Department where he was currently serving. Scott was a dedicated officer and will be missed by those who had the pleasure of serving with him. Our condolences go out to his family and friends in this time of mourning.
