In accordance with U.C.A 53-3-210.5 (Learner Permit law), new drivers may obtain a learner permit at age 15 but are not required to obtain the permit until a minimum of 6 months prior to obtaining their license. Please be aware students that will be taking the driver education course will need to have this learner permit prior to completing the driver education course. This learner permit allows a 15 year old to drive with a parent, legal guardian or a licensed driver education instructor.
Students must obtain the learner permit prior to beginning any behind the wheel driving with an instructor. The permit must be held for six months prior to applying for a Utah driver license.
To obtain a learner permit, an applicant must appear at a Driver License Division office, pass a 50-question written test, provide an original birth certificate, social security card, address verification and pay a $15 fee. The parent or legal guardian must sign the learner permit application. To prepare for the written test, applicants can obtain a driver handbook on our web site www.driverlicense.utah.gov or at any Driver License Division office. The web site also contains a practice test, which may help the applicant prior to taking their written test.
Please be aware that you may not apply for the learner until your fifteenth birthday.
Drivers under the age of 18 must carry a learner permit for 6 months before they can obtain their permanent driver license.
