One of the requirements for obtaining a Utah concealed firearm permit is to receive general familiarity training from a Utah certified firearm instructor. These instructors are certified and taught at BCI on Utah law related to firearms, carry and concealed statutes and rules, and the use of deadly force by a private citizen. Additionally instructors are taught in the processes of the permit as it relates to training, application and renewal, denial criteria, and the appeals process.
BCI has been teaching and certifying instructors since the introduction of H.B. 350. The first course was offered in May 2006 and courses are currently being offered monthly. Of the total pool of certified instructors, approximately 2/3 of those are out of state. The remaining third are Utah residents. The instructor training continues to be very successful with an increase in the caliber of training being offered to permit applicants. BCI staff has consistently received excellent reviews about the professionalism and customer service of the staff and the level of training provided.
