During a February enforcement project in Southern Utah, troopers from the Vehicle Safety Section of the Utah Highway Patrol inspected large trucks. Over 50 percent of the trucks that troopers inspected were put out of service for equipment violations. Nearly 15 percent of the drivers were placed out of service for various violations. This was an effective enforcement activity that helped make the roads safer to travel.
During the month of February troopers around the state gave 51 presentations to 1,056 people. The presentations were provided to a variety of different groups, from Cub Scouts to high school driver’s education classes.
Thanks to the generosity of the 2008 Utah State Legislature, one-time funding has been appropriated for the expansion of the High School Adoption program to include additional schools throughout the state. The overall goal of the High School Adoption program is to increase seatbelt use among teen drivers and passengers, and to promote life-long habits of seatbelt use. The pilot program began at Provo High School during the 2006-07 school year. The Provo High School students increased their seatbelt usage from 72% to 92%, from August to May of that year.
On March 24th at least nine new troopers will be hired and begin training. The new troopers will be assigned to Weber/Morgan, Summit/Wasatch, and Utah Counties.
