Managing Vehicular Pursuit and Emergency Response

Course Goal:

This course emphasizes the proper vehicular pursuit and emergency response
techniques for optimal officer safety.

Course Direction:

This course is designed for the in-service officer for ongoing professional development.
This course is not intended for basic training cadets. The scenario based portion
of this course will provide the student with feedback during an
assessment pursuit. This course is one of a three part series and will be taught on a
closed course.

Required Equipment:
The officer should bring an approved DOT helmet. However, if one is not available,
POST will provide one. POST EVO vehicles will be used for this course.

Learning Objectives:
The objectives will focus on multi-tasking during vehicular emergency response or
pursuit response. Officers will demonstrate the physical knowledge skills required to
implement proper procedures during an emergency response or pursuit situation. A
lecture will cover current case law, high risk driving habits and behavior that lead to
accidents, and the responsibilities of the officer. The following topics will be presented
and discussed in depth:
• Case law
• Common causes of law enforcement accidents
• Managing the inside of your vehicle
• Practical exercise
• Pursuit intervention techniques
